Carolina Dominant in Victory over Bills

Welcome to Carolina, Mr. Alex Smith.
The former #1 overall draft pick that came to Carolina in a trade two weeks ago showed why GM Winuvas and Coach John Fox coveted the young quarterback, throwing for 215 yards and 3 touchdowns while completing 14 of 21 passes and leading the Panthers to a 49-10 victory over the Buffalo Bills.
"The kid showed us some mental toughness," Coach Fox said after the game. "He had a horrible game last week against Tampa. Horrible. I think Alex would be the first to say it and agree with me also. He came out today against a pretty good Buffalo defense and did a great job running our offense."
Smith did throw an interception that went for a touchdown, but Coach Fox quickly dismissed it.
"He got hit trying to throw a slant to (Marques) Colston, and some defensive tackle, Williams I think, got lucky. How often do you see a defensive lineman catch a ball, much less run it back? Just a good play by them. Tip your hat to them on that."
A solid running attack helped Smith out immensely, with 136 yards on 18 carries by DeAngelo Williams and 64 yards from Johnathan Stewart on 8 carries. Williams also had a back-breaking 64 yard touchdown romp that essentially iced the game in the 3rd quarter.
The defense got in on the scoring fun as well, with both CB Richard Marshall and Chris Gamble getting picks and taking them to the house. Another interception grab by reserve defensive tackle Tyler Brayton helped get the game finished up late in the fourth quarter.
"Defense was aggressive all game long, and our corners just kept blankets on their receivers all day long," Coach Fox beamed at his post-game conference. "Only one sack but when you get 3 interceptions, you gotta love the results."
Buffalo managed just 231 yards of total offense to the Panthers' 439. Trent Edwards went 18 of 33 for 216 yards and 3 INTs in a sub-par performance. The running game was not much better, with running back Marshawn Lynch getting 17 yards on 15 carries.
Wide receiver Terrell Owens was unusually silent after only getting one reception for 9 yards. Another throw his way ended in a Richard Marshall INT touchdown where Owens was "posterized" with a stiff-arm to the helmet. Owens' only words for the media after the game, which he kept repeating, was "I run the plays that are called."
The Bills (1-6) head back to Buffalo to face the Texans, while the Panthers (5-1) will go to sunny Phoenix to face the Cardinals (1-5).
